Clarkson girls pursue soccer dreams through trip to Barcelona

The Clarkson Soccer Club enjoyed an eye-opening experience recently when its Under-17 girls’ team was given the chance to compete against four first division women’s professional teams in Barcelona.
In an effort led by technical director Ricardo Isgro and Diego Pereira, CSC Interational Advisor, Clarkson went on a two-week tour through the Spanish city, where it played against FC Barcelona, one of the most popular professional teams in the world, as well as RCD Espanyol de Barcelona, CF Damm and CF Palleja last month.
“Our girls went there to compete and they were amazing and now it’s opened a lot of opportunities for scholarships and other opportunities,” Isgro said.“For the ones who go to universities, the fact that they have this on their resume is something unique for their profile.”
Clarkson is recognized as the first Canadian club to send a girls’ team to Barcelona for a tour of this magnitude.
While FC Barcelona is very selective in accepting teams for visits, Clarkson was able to get in because of its track record and strong relationship with a number of professional clubs across South America.
Opportunities in professional soccer are very hard to come by, especially for women because the landscape is smaller compared to the men’s game. However, Isgro saw the experience as motivational for the girls.
“(The women players in Barcelona) have contracts, they get paid and make a living out of soccer,” he said. “We felt it was the best channel to expose our girls to.”
It was an experience that helped the Clarkson team prepare for next month’s trip to New York, where they’ll compete in the National Elite Womens Soccer Showcase.
Clarkson is also encouraged by one of its male players, 18-year-old Markian Krencil signing a five-month contract with Palleja’s second division team.He left for Barcelona earlier this week after spending the summer playing in Brazil.
“He’s building his way up step by step and we’re very supportive of him,” Isgro said. “Our hope is he’ll be able to stay there and move forward in his career. It would make us very proud because no one from our club has played in Europe.”
